Beyond the gates of Jackson Hole

I finally got to ski the backcountry off of Jackson Hole.  After skiing a Granite lap in the morning we headed back up the tram  and went out the south gate towards Cody Peak.

Dropping into the "Double A Chute" in Granite Canyon

It was a pretty short boot pack before we we on the top of Once is Enough.

After looking down in it for a while and contemplating the VW Bus size chunk of snow just waiting to rip down, we decided to keep heading up to the top of Cody Peak to check out Twice is Nice.  It looked pretty good with a nice and easy entrance, though the crux was apparently around the bend so we couldn’t see it from the top.

Me, cautiously dropping in

I was a little nervous dropping in not knowing what lie ahead, and skiing with a bunch of guys that are very good skiers.  But when I finally got around the bend, what I thought was just going to be a narrow crux turned out to be a lot rockier and icier than I was hoping.  I carefully maneuvered through it and was excited to open it up down bellow.

Once is Enough is the couloir on lookers left and Twice is Nice is the “S” shaped couloir on lookers right.  We hiked up another short bootpack to ski the Tenderloin back down before we started the traverse back to the resort.
